A Lonely Death or a Vero Beach Miracle?

My husband was nearly severed in two in a tractor accident 20 years ago in our groves in Vero Beach Florida, and he is out of town today giving his “chance” story to several hundred people.

Most people who are in tractor accidents like this do not survive to tell the tale.

I want him to post his story, personally, however, because his scars are not mine to show, nor it is mine to give away, so we’ll just have to see if there is any interest in knowing more about a college kid nearly dying alone in the middle of nowhere…and having to crawl through canals that are full of gators and snakes…all bloody and alone.

Was it a miracle or chance that he survived? Ask him!

Born at the right Time

Chris Lopez grew up in the sixties and was always kind even as a youth he would befriend the unpopular kids. He knew he was building some kind of karma. Chris’s parents raised him on rock n’ roll. He eventually idolized the Beatles much like nearly every youth of his generation. As a boy Chris dreamed of finding a new kind of treasure, a 20th century treasure. He grew up feeling much the same pains as other kids but he knew some day he was destined for something bigger…

In 1994, thirty-two year old computer salesman and married father of two, Chris Lopez had a ’84 Subaru for sale. (His mother’s Subaru, Chris was with her when she bought it new). Influenced by his father’s life-long interest in bartering, Chris decides to list the Subaru in the For Trade section of the local newspaper instead of the For Sale section. This seemingly insignificant detail turns out to have an enormous impact on his life.

Two days after the ad is placed, Tony Cox, 60’s, an avant garde painter from the beat generation, a friend of Jackson Pollack calls. He asks if Chris is interested in Beatles memorabilia and informs Chris that he is Yoko Ono’s second husband (before John). When they meet, Tony, (along with his fourth wife, Jane, middle 30’s, a historian who may be writing about Tony) they arrive in an old VW with what appears to be all of their positions in the back of it. Chris, like anyone, is skeptical at first but Tony is able to prove his claim with magazine articles (People magazine) and then something much better. Tony has an acetate recording on an original Beatles Apple label of a song by Yoko Ono that she made for their daughter called “Don’t Worry Kyoko”. (This song eventually is released on a B side of a Lennon single). They talk for about an hour and a half and Chris trades the Subaru, valued at $1300 for the acetate and a two page letter in Yoko’s hand writing.

After authenticating his material through EMI and the Lennon estate, Chris eventually parlays unreleased beatles recordings into a possible movie deal.
