By Stephanie Carrion

Always personable and professional, I was quickly on a first name-basis with some of the many celebrities who frequented the establishment. In addition to schmoozing with the stars, I was still an active member of Ms. McNeil’s panel of ex-convicts. I was the only former federal prisoner, and the only female amongst them. The kids really took to me. When the floor opened for their questions, most of them were directed to me. It gave me a very good feeling to think that speaking about my experiences just might have a positive impact on their lives.

In April 1999, I was nominated for the 1999 Urban Success Award. There at the Century Plaza hotel , I was introduced to singer Natalie Cole and former Los Angeles Chief of police, Bernard Parks. I was escorted to the event by my nephew, an L.A. county sheriff’s deputy. From strung out dopefiend and convict to hobnobbing with the elite and powerful, it was a heady experience ! It should have been smooth sailing from that point, but sadly greed and good nature got me in trouble again.

After leaving the halfway house, I inherited a three bedroom house in La Puente where I lived with my adult son Tonyo. I opened my home to those getting out of prison who were less fortunate than I and soon wound up with more expenses than my job at the hotel could provide for. While I continued to work at the hotel, I used my position to gain information which I funneled to the girls who came to live with me, and my credit card fraud ring was on and cracking. One of them was arrested and told who provided her with the credit cards. The rest as they say, is history.

After 2 yrs. in prison, I was released again to a halfway house in January 2002, and found work at Select A service as a merchandiser. I worked 6 hrs.a day. four days a week for $9.50 an hour. Less than three weeks after i started, my supervisor called me in and offered me a full-time data entry position. With the full knowledge and approval of my supervisors, I used my new position to again benefit my fellow ex-convicts. This time it was all legit! I was able to employ 21 inmates from the federal halfway house. The counselors were now calling me to place inmate clients on job sites ! After nearly twenty years weighted down by a prison number, I have finally successfully completed parole and remain a productive member of society and Narcotic Anonymous. Moreover , I remain dedicated to my desire to help others who want to reclaim their lives and dignity. When an ex-felon can con tribute to rather than detract from society, we all benefit. I believe it is an idea whose time has come.

I had gotten a new job with IBM and was transferring away from my cow neighbors (literally) in Vermont to a hopefully more lively lifestyle befitting a single person in their 20s. The only person I knew in Boston was an ex-boyfriend to whom I was not speaking. I knew nothing about the town and had no idea where I was going to live. All I had planned was that on Monday I was packing my car and driving to Boston. On the Saturday before I left I decided to go skiing one more time, by myself, and while on a chairlift, met a guy from Marblehead, a town north of Boston. He introduced me to his parents, who immediately invited me to stay with them and help me find a place to live. I did, and within a day found a great apartment and a roommate I keep in touch with to this day. I don’t remember ever worrying about the move or any of the details. I possessed a calm faith that it would all work out – and by golly, it did.

There’s a story told in a published biography of Harrison Ford, the well-known actor. It goes like this.  Before Ford was an actor he worked as a carpenter. He was a really good carpenter but acting was his love.  So he loaded everything he had into his VW Bug, left Wisconsin where he was attending college,  and set out for California.  He found some acting work but carpentry paid better.  He built a recording studio for Sergio Mendes and a sun deck for Sally Kellerman.  He built an expansion for Francis Ford Coppola’s office.  That led to a small part in American Graffiti, directed by Lucas and another part in The Conversation, directed by Coppola. But carpentry still paid better.  Lucas hired Ford to build some shelves in his home and sometimes hired him to read lines with other actors who were auditioning.

This was the case when Ford was working on hanging a door at Lucas’ new production facility in Northern California. Actor after actor went though the auditions and readings.  Nobody was right for the part of Han Solo, pilot of the Millennium Falcon. Then somebody said, “Let’s audition the carpenter.  He’s a pretty good-looking guy.”  Harrison Ford read the lines and got a major part in Star Wars.

A career was launched by a chance meeting and he never had to work as a carpenter after that.

One fall afternoon, I was on my way home from work . I worked directing trains for Metro North in New York City. I came across two girls fighting I broke it up and they pushed me aside and began to box some more.

I pulled them apart and declared a winner I held Mary’s arm in the air and said, “Ok ok you Won.” She started to tell me why they were going at each other, it was over a boy from school. The other girl Stacy Picford was perusing Mary’s Boyfriend and spreading lies around school, so Mary and her friends confronted Stacy and a fight ensued…
Mary started to stop at my house and by my car some school mornings asking for a ride, because she was late for school. It was then, I learned she attended my old school in Yonkers, NY. Roosevelt HS. Where I attended school a few years earlier, went to Roosevelt H.S. it was predominantly white but, now that Yonkers had mandatory integration, Roosevelt was now, mainly a Black and Hispanic populated campus. We struct up a quick friendship… more like mentor ,protegee type relationship. I started taking Mary out around town with me then we started to go to the city, Mary was from the projects in Yonkers . I loved bringing her new places showing her another side of life, outside of the rough New York Projects.

One evening, on my way home from work, Mary put a tape in my car stereo. She and a friend had made the tape in the Galleria Mall in White Plains. I was awe struck. Mary sang like an angel…I was blown away I said ,”Mary you should keep practicing your really talented.” Mary was very shy and humble and thanked me repeatedly… She then professed that I was one of the only people that ever encouraged or complimented her, ever. We grew closer and spent more time together.

I woke up one morning from a dream that was so real I could hardly believe it was a dream. I told Mary, “You were world famous and everyone Loved you and knew your name, you were on top of a mountain in a long white flowing dress, making a music video.” Mary Laughed and said “Dee you too much.” I told her a few more times I’m still having dreams of you being a Star, you need to let as many people as you can hear you sing. After afew years together of sharing my middle class upbringing and part of my world with Mary. We had many great adventures.

My young friend was signed to record contract at Uptown Records In New York City She is now known to the world as singing sensation Ms.Mary J.Blige.

Rising Up

“I am moving to North Carolina”, that’s what my sister told me and my mother, back in July of this year. My mom who lost her job and home, during this recession was living with my sister in Richmond, VA, while I was attending school at Virginia State University. Once, my freshman year was completed, I had no place to go but with my mom and sister, who had now moved to Woodbridge, VA, closer to my sister’s job in Washington DC.

My mom and I were trying to find a job but nothing was working, so my sister became very resistant towards us. So, in July she decided to move to North Carolina with her daughter to live with my cousin and her children. Me and my mother was stuck, I can remember sitting in the bathroom with a knife to my chest, just crying. “I don’t know what to do”, talking to my girlfriend on the phone. She was trying to calm me down but it didn’t work. I eventually put the knife down, stop crying because I thought where is crying going to get me?

We helped my sister move, and she sent us back to Alexandria, VA, on a train. Over the next few days, we lived in hotels and motels, trying to find a homeless shelter to sleep in. We finally got into a shelter and stayed out there for a week. Then, my aunt in New Jersey, told my mom to come live with her, but my mom didn’t want to live me by myself. I knew I’d be fine. Since then, my mom and I are doing better, I haven’t really talked to my sister, and my girlfriend and I are still together. But, there’s still a problem, I’m not in school.

One night, I remembered my girlfriend telling me about University of Maryland, she said that’s where a lot of students at her community college transfer to. So, I looked the University up and became very interested. All, I want is an opportunity to better myself and get an education. The lesson that I learned during the time me and my mother were homeless was, I don’t want to be here again, in that situation. The best way I can guarantee that, is education. I believe the University can provide that for me. “People don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”, that quote has stuck with me since high school, and now I am planning, and I don’t want to fail….

But, the worst happened I didn’t get accepted to the school, lost my job and things weren’t looking any brighter. I was lost, my girlfriend was turning away from me, she says, “I need a man, Amir, I love you, I just can’t be with you till you get yourself together”. How you could blame her, I mean, here I was 19 years old, dropped out of college, no job, barely able to pay my rent, no car, and don’t know what to do with my life. Tell me about struggle or being confused, but coming up to DC helped me realize that my situation isn’t as bad as it could be. Things happen for a reason, we all know this, and it’s true. Just think back when you going run across the street to work to get something for lunch, then walks in your boss saying, “Lunch isn’t till 1pm”. All of sudden, you look outside the window to see that, someone got hit by a car or there was a car accident.

Some people have failed to realize that, as much as they think their lives are hard right now. There is someone who is doing 10 times worst, I mean at the time I didn’t have no job, little money, but I wasn’t on the street. I was fortunate that my landlords understood my situation and worked with me. I can real busy though, I loved my girlfriend, I really do, she’s the bright spot in my life, she wants to be happy, so we are now currently taking a break, till everything is straight with me. I have actually found a job, I am still living at the same place over on Northeast, and going to start school later this month to be a police officer or work in cyber space crimes. I have come back to my first true loves, writing and music. Writing just lets me be free, I can tell the world my pain, my struggles, and once I write it, then I can put it all behind me. Music just lets me express myself, I am somewhat of a shy individual, but when it comes to music I just let it all out.

I have no regrets, because like I stated earlier, things happen for a reason, sometimes you find out why and sometimes you don’t, that’s life. My struggles over the past 2 years have molded me into the person I will become in the future. My mother is my motivation, she is 58 years old and has worked for over 25 years and still has to work, and I want that to stop. My sister talks to me now, and my friend/girlfriend is doing well, we still talk, just growing up and taking things slow. What’s your story? What’s your purpose? Me personally, I don’t know yet, but I can’t wait to find out, I’m Rising up to the challenge…..
